Dental Implant Aftercare

Dental Implant Aftercare

Caring for Your Dental Implant

Looking after your dental implant is an important part of the treatment process. Good aftercare helps support healing following implant placement and plays a key role in maintaining the long-term health of both your implant and surrounding tissues.

Before you leave the practice, we’ll provide personalised aftercare instructions based on your treatment. If you have any questions during your recovery, our team is always happy to help.

The First Few Days After Implant Placement

It's normal to experience some mild side effects while the area heals. You may notice: Mild discomfort or tenderness, slight swelling around the gums or face, minor bruising or light bleeding during the first day. These symptoms are usually temporary and should gradually improve over the following days. If you experience anything that concerns you, please contact the practice for advice.

Looking After the Implant Site

Follow Your Dentist's Instructions

After getting dental implants, it’s essential to follow the dental implants aftercare instructions provided by your dentist or oral surgeon. These will include guidelines tailored to your unique treatment and healing process, ensuring optimal results and minimizing complications.

Avoid Eating Hard or Sticky Foods

As part of the aftercare for implants, it’s essential to avoid hard or sticky foods—like nuts, caramel, and chewy candies—during the first few weeks after surgery. These types of foods can place excessive pressure on the implant site, interfere with the healing process, and may even cause damage to the implant or surrounding tissues.

Rinse with Salt Water

Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water starting 24 hours after surgery. Salt water helps reduce inflammation, promotes healing, and keeps the surgical area clean by flushing out bacteria. Avoid using mouthwash with alcohol, as it can irritate the healing tissues.

Take Pain Medication as Prescribed

You may experience some discomfort after the implant procedure. To manage pain, your dentist may prescribe pain relievers or recommend over-the-counter medications. Taking pain medication as directed will help you stay comfortable and avoid unnecessary inflammation.

Avoid Smoking

As part of the aftercare of dental implants, it’s crucial to avoid smoking, as it can hinder the healing process by reducing blood flow to the gums and increasing the risk of infection. To ensure the best outcome for your dental implants, it’s highly recommended to quit or significantly reduce smoking during the healing phase.

Watch for Signs of Infection

Keep an eye out for any signs of infection, such as excessive swelling, redness, or pus around the implant site. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your dentist immediately to prevent further complications.

Keep the Implant Area Clean

Brush your teeth gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush to keep the area clean without irritating the implant site. Be careful not to scrub the surgical area too hard, as it may cause bleeding or infection. Your dentist may recommend an antibacterial rinse to aid in the healing process.

Rest and Avoid Physical Strain

After the procedure, it’s essential to take it easy for the first few days. Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or intense exercise that could cause unnecessary strain or disturb the implant area, allowing it time to heal properly.

Use a Cold Compress

During the initial days of your dental implants recovery time, applying a cold compress to the area of your face near the implant site can help reduce swelling and discomfort. For effective relief, use the cold pack for 15–20 minutes at a time, several times throughout the day.

Attend Follow-up Appointments

As a key part of dental implants aftercare, it’s essential to keep all scheduled follow-up appointments with your dentist. These visits enable your dentist to monitor the healing process and ensure that the implant is properly integrating with your jawbone. Any necessary adjustments or additional care can be addressed during these appointments.

After Your Dental Implant Procedure

After your dental implant has been placed, you’ll need to rest until the effects of the local anaesthetic have worn off, which may take several hours.

Most patients are able to return to their normal daily routine within 24 hours, including going back to work. However, you should avoid strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting or intense exercise for the first few days, as this may increase bleeding and swelling.

It’s normal to experience mild bleeding during the first 24–48 hours. If this happens, gently bite down on a piece of clean, damp gauze placed over the area for around 20–30 minutes. If the bleeding persists, becomes heavier or you’re concerned, please contact our clinic for advice.

Looking After Your Implant

To support healing after your procedure:

  • Eat soft foods for at least one week, chewing on the opposite side of your mouth where possible.
  • Keep your mouth as clean as possible by following your normal oral hygiene routine, taking care around the implant site.
  • Rinse with a chlorhexidine mouthwash three or four times a day for two weeks, holding the mouthwash in your mouth for 1–2 minutes each time. Your dentist will recommend a suitable product.
  • If you’ve had a sinus lift procedure or implants placed in the upper back jaw, avoid blowing your nose for approximately two weeks.
  • For the first two weeks, avoid flying and swimming. If you need to sneeze, try to do so with your mouth open rather than through your nose.
  • Mild discomfort is normal. If required, you may take paracetamol and ibuprofen as directed, unless you’ve been advised otherwise by your dentist or GP.
  • Contact us promptly if you experience increasing pain, swelling or any signs of infection.

During the First Two Weeks, Please Avoid

  • Hot food and hot drinks during the first 24 hours.
  • Using straws or sucking on anything, including e-cigarettes.
  • Touching the implant site with your fingers or tongue.
  • Smoking or drinking alcohol, as these can delay healing.
  • Wearing dentures that cover the implant site unless your dentist has advised otherwise.
